I travel a lot and I find that the best practice is to know the area where you will be going a bit better it saves a lot of time.. factors such as traffic and costs are important to note

Don’t wait until last minute to book your flight. Not only is the flight more expensive, but your seating options may be limited to less than desirable seats, unless you have status with the airline

I travel all over SA for diff projects and I would advise you plan ahead and book accomodation and flight before the time as unforeseen delays happen its cost me a huge project before.. 

And if you travel for business, do not forget to keep all your slips regarding your expenses such as flight cost, hotel accomodation and meals as you might be able to claim for tax purposes

I don't travel as much as I want but here is what I do when I go abroad:

1. Print every confirmation, ticket, approval, etc. that is part of your trip and have it in a folder. It makes border control much easier. Especially the USA.
2. Make copies of your credit cards and keep them with you in case you lose on, you have the details with you.
3. See a style constultant, they will show you how you can travel for a week and pack only enough clothes to fit into a carry on. And you will look stylish every day.
4. Download the apps you will use over there already and load your credit card information. Kuala Lumpur does not have Uber, they have Grab.
5. Make sure your roaming works.
6. Make sure you can buy stuff with your credit card even if your roaming does NOT work. Have major issues here but one of my 3 cards could work without roaming.
7. Have a printed map of your first day's arrival, from airport, to hotel, to meetings. Go on Google maps and do street view to see how the hotel and offices look like.
8. Find out what pay as you go mobile cards there are. Like when I go to the UK, 3 Network has a 30 day sim for 20 Pounds, 300 minutes and unlimited 4G data. Love it.

You must put it in the budget the travelling costs so that you keep you financial records update,in that way you won't waste money and go beyond the budget.because your financial statement must balance.
