Have you ever pursued a goal, only to fall short of achieving it? You may go “full steam ahead” at the beginning of your journey, only to lose your enthusiasm during the first month. This can be demotivating and confusing because you’re trying to reach a goal that you’ve been chasing for so long.

The key to achieving any goal and making a long-term change is to apply both commitment (so that you start and take action) and consistency (so that you build positive habits and reach your goal). If you decide to follow and apply these eight strategies consistently, you’re bound to see the positive changes that you want in your life.

1 Write down your goals
Michael Korda said that “Written goals have a way of transforming wishes into wants; cant's into cans; dreams into plans; and plans into reality.” There may be many goals that you want to achieve in life but if you don’t have any of them written down, your chance of achieving them is significantly reduced. When you write your goals down, you make them tangible and, therefore, achievable. So, go ahead and grab a pen and a notebook and write down any goals that you want to achieve in life.

2 Plan your time
If you want to manage any area of your life effectively, you need to plan and manage your time. To manage your time, you need to look at how you currently spend it. What do you spend your time doing every day? Are you happy with how you spend your time? Are you spending your time on things that will help you to get you to the goals? What do you want to change? How can you track and manage your time going forward?

3 Manage your money
Your finances play a significant role in your overall wellbeing. It’s hard to have peace of mind when you’re stressed about your finances. One of the simplest places that you can start is to simply understand what happens to your money. Monitor your income and spending regularly, and decide where you can make changes to improve your financial wellness.

4 Take care of your physical health
Your body is the only place that you have to live, so it’s important to take care of it. How you take care of your physical health will reflect in your mental health and your mindset. Research has often shown that the old saying “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” is true. Simple ways to take care of your physical health include, drinking more water, eating healthy meals, getting active and moving your body, and getting to know your health numbers by doing a basic health assessment at your local clinic.

5 Balance work, play and rest
It’s not always easy to get the balance right. You already know that when you work too much, it can lead to exhaustion and burnout. You, therefore, need to include play and rest in your life, too. After a long week at work, you may want to have some fun and you fill your weekends with social activities and more things to do. This, too, can leave you feeling exhausted because you haven’t made time to rest and recharge. When you plan and manage your time, ensure that you’ve allocated a fair split between work, play and rest.

6 Declutter your space
Research shows us that a cluttered space affects how we feel. It affects our mental health and can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed and stressed. Often a cluttered space can also reflect that we have a lot going on in our minds – it essentially becomes a physical manifestation of what’s happening in our heads. If you find that you’re unable to focus clearly and constantly feel stressed, start by decluttering one small space, like your work desk or a cupboard in your home.

7 Practice gratitude daily
You can benefit significantly from practicing gratitude daily. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly associated with overall happiness, positive experiences and high levels of resilience. A simple way that you can practice gratitude every day is by writing down three things for which you are grateful. By maintaining a daily gratitude journal, you’ll be able to look back at all the good that you have in your life and build a positive mindset.

8 Surround yourself with positive people
If you want to achieve any goal in life, you need to have the right people around you to support you on your journey. As with any other attitude and mindset, positivity is infectious. When you surround yourself with people who are positive and who want to see you reach your goals, it becomes easy for you to remain positive along the way. In turn, you build a community that wants you to succeed and one in which you, too, can make a positive contribution.
